Tsintzina or Tzitzina (or Polidroso, which is the official name of the village) is nested in a dense fir forest, at the point where three gorges meet. The beauty of the landscape alone was not enough to keep the inhabitants of the village close to it, who, at the turn of the 20th century, took the road leading to foreign countries, seeking a better fortune. Very few inhabitants remained in the village, struggling to make both ends meet. The beautiful stone building of the Primary School, built in 1891, was left without children, closed down in 1940, and since then it was deserted. In 1967, the Association of American Tsintzinians, who had always held their birthplace in their heart and mind, donated the money to convert the school building into a guesthouse, so that their fellow Tsintzinians living abroad could be accommodated in the summer. Later the building came into the possession of the Municipality. Antonios Papanikolaou, who is also in charge of the guesthouse of “Anavriti”, took the management of the building and converted it into the "Scholarchio", one of the most popular mountain guesthouses in Laconia.
From the moment one enters the "Scholarchio" his glance is captured by the exquisite shared sitting area of the guesthouse, which serves as a meeting-place for the visitors. The decoration is discrete, enhancing traditional elements and objects of daily use from the past centuries. The rooms are ample, bright and minimally decorated, while the absence of "technology" is characteristic, something that constitutes the philosophy of the guesthouse.
The breakfast is lavish, consisting of tighanites (pancakes), home-made marmalade, and honey from the region of Mount Parnonas. The major advantage of the "Scholarchio" is the air of comfort and intimacy that the visitor feels from the very first moment. This is the reason why hikers and mountaineers have made the "Scholarchio" their favourite haunt. Read more
